Valuation Request - Hennessy X.O.

Postby WJK59 » Sun Nov 17, 2013 12:20 am

I'm trying to help my dad put a value on two bottles of Hennessy X.O. that he's had, unopened, for years. I believe he received these as a gift back in the late 50's or early 60's. There are two (2) bottles, both in gift boxes. One box has type on the back; the other is blank.
Any information as to value would be greatly appreciated.

The Hennessy XO and Extra have sold in similar bottles and boxes with a portrait of a British military officer, possibly Richard Hennessy (?) on the front for quite a few years. Here are example of older XO bottles and boxes.

Your bottles are very similar but the box design would probably be older. I would guess-timate your bottles to be early 50s
Does the glass have the inscription prohibiting reuse? This was mandated by US law from 1932 to 1964 so they should have it.
I would estimate value at $375 each, maybe $400. The older XO (with the larger portrait) above resells for about $350.

Thanks for the response. No inscription on the glass prohibiting re-use. That being the case, I'm guessing that maybe he received this after 1964 - maybe '65 or slightly later. Does that have much impact on the value?

I would say that it doesn't have much impact. Pricing old cognac is not an art more of a matter of experience. I have experience with buying and selling a number of Hennessy XO cognacs of the two types pictured in my first post within the last 3 years. Mostly buying in US and Europe and reselling on Asian market. The more expensive/older XO sells for about $350 in Europe/US and resells for 30% more to Asian retailers. The difference between the two types is about $25. Yours is older so I guessed $25 more than the older of my two. It could be that your box is extremely rare and a collector would pay much more for it but if it is extremely rare it would be extremely difficult to find any sales data on it. The cap seal, bottle style and labels look the same as the bottles I sold so I would say that they are within 5 years of each other age-wise.
I also bought these bottles last week for $450 each. They are Hennessy Extra which is higher grade than XO so the higher price is justified but still brackets the price of your XO pretty well.

I still think your bottles are mid-late 50s and mine are 1960s. I am not convinced high end cognac bottles always complied with the bottle labeling law. I have Louis XIII and Baccarat carafes from the 1940s and 1950s that are not marked. On the other hand all regular shaped bottles like the VS or VSOP did comply with the federal law and you can rely on it for preliminary dating information. The XO bottle is unusual and I am guessing that it was never marked.

I found some new information on dating these bottles. The oval XO sticker changed through the years:
Oldest sticker: Black-on-white
Newer sticker: Gold-on-Black
Newest sticker: Gold-on-transparent

This would point to your bottles being more recent than the ones with the portrait... Generation 2 and 3. However I have never seen your style boxes before. You are pretty certain the bottles and boxes are a matched set?

Thanks, Mike - As far as I know, the bottles and boxes are a matched set. I have no reason to think otherwise. I'll call my dad this weekend to see if he can let me know what year he received these. It may not tell me how old they are, since they could have been a few years old when he got them, but it will eliminate any later dates from the estimate.

I sought help from a specialist (Don Henny). He suggested the XO logo on the bottle is painted directly on the glass and is not a clear plastic sticker. He says the first bottles of X.O were painted and this would make them older than the ones with white/beige stickers. Can you verify if he is correct? This would explain the very unusual boxes.

The small XO on the bottle is a sticker - not painted on the glass. That said, it's not clear plastic - it's a paper sticker; black and gold ink.

One of "XO" logos definitely appears to be transparent, not black. Is that one painted on the bottle or is it a sticker/label?
